If you have a tooth that is badly decayed, cracked or otherwise damaged and needs a restoration, you may have chosen to have a CEREC crown fitted. CEREC crowns offer the latest and most innovative restoration of this type. Designed using cutting edge CAD technology and created from a single block of ceramic via computer-assisted manufacturing, CEREC crowns are stronger and more accurate than any conventional crown. They can also be milled while you wait, meaning that you can leave with your restored smile the very same day.
In order for your shiny new restorations to be a success, you need to ensure your recovery is smooth and that you look after your new smile. Here is what you need to know about recovering from your CEREC crown procedure, and how to care for your CEREC crowns into the future.
You will have almost certainly been given at least a local anesthetic to numb the area where your crown was placed. This numbness can take a number of hours to dissipate, and your lips and tongue may feel strange during this time. We recommend that you avoid chewing and consuming any hot foods or drinks until the numbness has completely worn off. This is so you do not inadvertently hurt yourself.
We will also advise you to avoid sticky, chewy or hard foods for at least 24 to 48 hours after your procedure. This should help you avoid damage to your restoration, or even pulling it out, while the cement that is used to secure your new CEREC crown in place is still hardening.
It is normal for your teeth to feel sensitive for up to two weeks after your CEREC crown procedure. This may result in you experiencing pain when you eat or drink anything particularly hot, cold or sweet. Pain medications can be used to help manage this discomfort until it subsides.
You may also notice that little bits of dried cement used to stick your CEREC restoration in place coming off when you brush your teeth. This is normal, but if you find that there is an area around the crown that is particularly sharp, we recommend that you get in touch to arrange for us to file it down so that it can’t cause any damage to the soft tissues inside your mouth.
CEREC crowns may have the ability to be and reputation as the most durable and long-lasting type of crown restoration available, but in order for yours to achieve this it needs to be well looked after. The most important thing that you can do to secure the longevity and attractiveness of your crown is to stick to a strict and robust oral health routine. This means thorough brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and ensuring that you visit your dentist in Corunna, MI regularly for the health and condition of your teeth to be assessed.
