Though there are many causes of periodontal disease, the most common cause is from the bacteria that live in calculus (tarter). When calculus (tarter) builds up around the supporting tissues of the teeth, it actually causes the gums to begin pulling away from the teeth. The result is often tender, red or swollen gums and loose teeth.

Treatment involves removal of the deep calculus from under the gum tissue and may use medications in conjunction with treatment.
